You want to keep your Audi safe and running great on the streets of Nashua. The service department at Audi Stratham is here to help you with all your Audi service and maintenance needs. That includes helping you learn maintenance basics, like helping you learn how to check brake fluid at home.

What is Brake Fluid?

Just like your Audi's engine, the braking system needs to be kept lubricated so friction doesn't cause extra wear and tear. Brake fluid is a hydraulic liquid that lubricates the brake system and makes it easier to press the brake pedal. If you're driving in Concord with dirty brake fluid or not enough brake fluid, your braking system can corrode and wear out faster, leading to brake failure. Here are some signs that you need to check your Audi's brake fluid:

  • Low Brake Fluid Warning
  • Brake Light on
  • ABS Light stays on or blinks
  • The brake pedal is soft, or can be pressed all the way down without resistance.

What Color is Brake Fluid?

New brake fluid should be clear with a slight yellow tint to it. When you keep an eye on the color of your brake fluid, you're less likely to drive with dirty brake fluid. Ask yourself, "What color is brake fluid?" check it, and if it's dark, it's time to schedule a service appointment and get your brake fluid changed or do it yourself.

Steps for How to Check Brake Fluid

  1. Open your Audi's hood and properly prop it open.
  2. Check your owner's manual to see the exact location of the brake fluid reservoir. It will be located on the driver's side of the engine, towards the windshield.
  3. See what kind of brake fluid you need. It will be printed on top of the brake fluid reservoir. Only use the brake fluid printed on the reservoir.
  4. On the outside of the clear reservoir there are "minimum" and "maximum" lines. Make sure the brake fluid is above the minimum line and is the appropriate color. If it's nearly at the "minimum" line or discolored, add more.
  5. Fill the reservoir just to the "maximum" line.
